Senator Taveras Guzmán says he is not a traitor

The senator for the province of Santo Domingo, Antonio Taveras Guzmán, defended himself this Thursday from the criticism made by feminist groups for his vote in favor of the Penal Codeapproved in the Upper House, in first reading with the exclusion of the three causes of abortion.

The legislator posted a video on his Twitter account in which he says he is not a “traitor or a sellout” for his vote in favor of the bill, despite the fact that the women’s groups fighting for the decriminalization of abortion were counting on him to was his spokesperson in favor of his initiative.

“Voting in 1st reading for the #NuevoCódigoPenal does not mean being a traitor or sold; neither does it mean that the fight ended, the story does not end there. I neither get tired nor give up because I am consistent, which is why, as stated in the minutes of the Commission, I voted for the inclusion of the three grounds”, Taveras Guzmán said in the message.

He reiterated that in the next session he will announce his position on the subject, when the project is put to a second reading vote.
