Senator recommends creation of the Dominican Institute of Agricultural Greenhouses

The creation of a Dominican Institute of Agricultural Greenhouses (IDIAGRI) would help producers to be able to combat effectively the pests, improve exports and create new product variants with the required quality. This was considered by Senator José Antonio Castillo Casado.

The senator for the San José de Ocoa province revealed that currently the increase in fertilizer prices has skyrocketed, as is the case of Urea, and due to the war between Russia and Ukraine, the increases have gone further.

“There are many things that affect greenhouse growers. Generally they incur in high-interest loans to raise the infrastructure, the issue of pests, the marketing of products, among others, are issues that are affecting the sector and therefore this class is being hit, to the point that today no it is profitable to have a greenhouse”, expressed the congressman.

He explains that when all the problems are added to the fall in demand for the products and a drop in prices due to the little circulating, it has caused a chain of fatal events for those who have greenhouses in the country.

According to Jose Antony Castillo with the creation of the Dominican Institute of Agricultural Greenhouses (IDIAGRI) it will be possible to take steps to create laboratories where research would be done to control pests, manage grace periods in the State to achieve a zero rate in the Agricultural Bank, which they do not have; the issue of export and quality control, among other benefits.

In the province of San José de Ocoa there is a significant number of greenhouses that dedicate a large number of square meters to produce food.
