The senator of the Broad Front (FA), Silvia Nane accused the coalition of carrying out a “historical restoration” and the Ministry of Defense of “putting State terrorism and civil violence on an equal footing” for the decision to open to the public the People’s Jailbelonging to the National Liberation Movement – Tupamaros,
“I am a pacifist, a militant of non-violence, but you cannot equate (state terrorism) with civil violence,” he said. the senator “You can’t give those signs of political validation to things that are not. It is very serious, because in a certain way, State decisions are often education for the populationNane said in an interview with La Diaria.
Faced with these expressions, the Minister of Defense responded on his Twitter account. “His accusation in La Diaria is aggravating and even more serious than justifying human rights violations, if they are “civil violence” (…) Torturing, killing, disappearing is ALWAYS reprehensible. The “prison of the people” is an expression of the brutal terrorism that devastated democracy (1972),” he wrote.

the minister concluded his statement by inviting the senator and the Special Commission on Human Rights, Equity and Genderwhich Nane presides over, “to go to the “people’s prison” where human rights were also brutally violated”.
“State terrorism is killing, torturing, disappearing people with the consent and coordination of State resources. It is the State against people who think differently from what the State thinks at that moment,” Nane said in the interview to differentiate the violence applied by the State from that exercised by the Tupamaros in the years prior to the dictatorship.
The senator, who is also a member of the Permanent Committee on Human Rights of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, pointed out that the ministry “is validating, with its actions, that social violence is the same as state terrorism” and that “this did not happen at any other historical moment”.
“It is part of that “historic restoration” that is being shown that it is not only from Cabildo Abierto (CA): it is a transversal thought” in the coalition, declared in reference to other events carried out by the ruling party that he pointed out in the interview. For example, the intention of the vice president, Beatriz Argimón, to reform the National Institution for Human Rights and the Ombudsman’s Office (Inddhh), after, in Argimín’s opinion, she intervened in the campaign for the referendum on March 27. The Inddhh had questioned the Law of Urgent Consideration regarding the growth in complaints of police abuse.
Anyway, Nane specifically targeted the party led by Guido Manini Ríos. For his intention to repeal the institute in question but also for the bill of house arrest for over 65swhich would especially benefit the repressors of the dictatorship and for the vindication of former president Jorge Pacheco Areco, who applied prompt security measures in the time before the coup of 1973, as “like a rebel in the face of injustice.”
