This morning, the senator of the Democratic Revolution (DR), Juan Ignacio Latorre, referred to the statement of former president Sebastián Piñera before the North Central High Complexity Crimes prosecutor, Ximena Chong. The parliamentarian commented positively on the former president’s attitude in contrast to the last hearing of the current Carabineros director general, Ricardo Yáñez, who exercised his right to remain silent.
Both Piñera and Yáñez are accused of their participation in the cause of crimes against humanity during the social outbreak. The latter as second in command in the military institution, where he held the position of director of Order and Security. For this reason, Latorre pointed out: “I think it is an example for the high command that will also be cited, for example, General Yáñez of the Carabineros, who has all the political support for the crisis we are experiencing.”

What the parliamentarian expressed is related to the tension regarding the security situation that has affected the Carabineros in recent weeks, in which three officers of the institution have died in police proceedings.
in conversation with Cooperative, Latorre stressed that Yáñez had been summoned to testify on previous occasions in which he did not appear before prosecutor Chong. Then, he exercised his right to remain silent, “valid in the process.”
“I think that the example that Piñera is giving in terms of collaboration and ‘look, no one can be on justice, let’s collaborate on this, let there be truth, justice, all the antecedents’, is an example not only for Yáñez but for all the high command involved in that period,” said the president of the DR.
Previously, the senator had commented to The citizen that “it will be the Justice that determines the responsibilities, I insist, criminal, political and civil for the serious and massive violations of human rights. Here there can be no impunity, all the truth must be pursued, all justice and also reparation for the victims”.
On this occasion, Piñera’s statement was extended for almost 10 hours in which he did not refuse to answer questions. It is expected that during this afternoon, the former president will testify again before prosecutor Chong.
