Senator Juan Ignacio Latorre (RD) ahead of the plebiscite: “The current Constitution is already repealed”

The senator for the Valparaíso region and president of the Democratic Revolution (DR), Juan Ignacio Latorre, acknowledged that there is an optimistic vision in the ruling party, in this last stage of the constituent process, when there are only six weeks left for the exit plebiscite. The parliamentarian of the Broad Front also valued the letter published this Saturday by former President Michelle Bachelet – where she reaffirmed her support for the proposal for a new Constitution – and pointed out that from her coalition (I Approve Dignity) they are for “I approve to advance”, where they assume that a victory on September 4 is not a point of arrival, but a “starting point for the changes that have been demanded.

In his participation in center table, and in relation to Bachelet’s public support for the Approval, Latorre believes that “the letter is very significant. It is worth reading, because the former President makes it very clear that it is necessary to leave behind the Constitution imposed by the dictatorship, where, unlike other former presidents, she without hesitation calls for a vote I approve, and says something that is very important for the political debate , which is that after September 5, the political forces will have to find a way to implement the new Constitution and make the necessary reforms, with the result of the Plebiscite on the table”.

In addition, the only representative of the Broad Front in the Senate, added that, in his opinion, “the current Constitution, created during the dictatorship and reformed in the Government of Ricardo Lagos, with the reforms that the right allowed, is already repealed, and the Citizenship cannot take any longer with this Fundamental Charter. The people clearly said they wanted a new Constitution, and they said it through a democratic mechanism, and therefore, to vote Rejection is to go backwards, and to pull the rope of a crisis more than we are not yet able to channel”.

However, faced with the possibility of making reforms or improvements to the new Constitution, after a hypothetical victory for the Approval, Latorre stated that he believes that “no Constitution, anywhere in the world, should be a text written in stone. In turn, the RD helmsman believes that the new Constitution itself establishes “democratic and institutional” mechanisms to make reforms to the Fundamental Charter, where “any political party can present reforms, citizens can present constitutional reforms, as well as the President of the Republic , the Congress of Deputies and the Chamber of the Regions”. For the parliamentarian, any change to the proposed new Constitution is something that will have to be debated democratically in the representative bodies, but also listening to the citizens.

Faced with the proposals for reforms to the new Fundamental Charter, Latorre said that until now, the only thing that the Official Party has formally received is the PPD proposal, which contains a series of points, where they show which aspects they would like to reform of the Constitution. proposal for a new Constitution. Although the parliamentarian assures that since I Approve Dignity there is “full willingness” to discuss those points, he believes that “the time to discuss and for it to be a serious reform, with sufficient consensus and the involvement of the Government, should be from 5 September, and not before, because there are only six weeks left and the focus today is the campaign for the Approval”.

Finally, the president of the DR showed the optimism of his sector in the face of the Plebiscite of Exit, assuring that they believe that “the victory of the Approval may be similar to the one that was in the second round of Boric with Kast (with a difference of almost 12 percentage points). ). 6% would vote I Approve The same poll projects that between 52.8% and 60% of the electoral roll would vote in the Plebiscite on September 4.

In that sense, Latorre pointed out that “we look at the polls very carefully, we analyze them, but at the same time we believe that they are often wrong. No poll is capable of predicting how many people are going to vote. We in the Command and according to some studies that The government has been monitoring, we believe that many people will vote, which can easily exceed the threshold of 60 or 65%, which, however, no one can predict, six weeks before the exit plebiscite”.
