Senator Insulza (PS) says that AC will vote against former foreign minister Allamand "according to his merits", but clarifies that in his opinion the libel "is not appropriate"

Senator José Miguel Insulza (PS) said that he will vote on the constitutional accusation (AC) against former foreign minister Andrés Allamand “according to its merits,” but in his opinion the accusatory libel “is not appropriate.”

in conversation with CNN Chile, the former Minister of Foreign Affairs of the government of Eduardo Frei Ruiz-Tagle, stated that “there are many things to criticize (the administration of President Piñera), such as not having signed Escazú or the abandonment of the Marrakech migration forum when we were about to hold the vice presidency.

“All these things are, in my opinion, serious criticism of the foreign policy of these years and not the fact that the chancellor has traveled or not,” said the Socialist parliamentarian and former head of the Interior of the government of Ricardo Lagos.

Insulza explained that “when you talk about AC you have to have some reason. One can be upset or feel bad -and I have serious criticism of this government’s management of foreign policy-, but none of these issues seems to be a cause for an AC”.

The former foreign minister and member of the Socialist Party (PS) maintained that “some may stay until the end while others leave earlier to prepare their (new) position (…) The important thing would be to verify that Allamand has not carried out both functions at the same time, something that does not seem very visible”.

The Government confirmed the resignation presented by the now ex-minister Andrés Allamand from his position in the Foreign Relations portfolio. This, after the criticism generated by his trip to Spain to take over as Undersecretary General of the Ibero-American General Secretariat (SEGIB) in the midst of the migrant and security crisis in the north of the country.

From the opposition they announced that they are evaluating presenting an accusatory libel against the former foreign minister. Deputy Iván Flores (DC) announced that the eventual constitutional accusation could be voted on by the plenary session of the Chamber of Deputies on February 23.
