Senator Insulza (PS) and continuity of the constitutional process: “It would be a pity that after so many years we are left with a rejection and forget about the matter”

Emphasizing deadlines and concessions, the Socialist Party (PS) senator José Miguel Insulza addressed the continuity of the constitutional process, declaring that “it would be a pity that after so many years we are left with a rejection and forget about the matter” .

The discussion for a new New Constitution continues, although not without complications. Let us remember that the presidents of the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies, Álvaro Elizalde (PS) and Raúl Soto (PPD), respectively, announced this week the postponement of the meeting between parties to address the constituent process. The meeting was scheduled for the Thursday before the National Holidays weekend. However, Chile Vamos was subtracted from the meeting, asking that the Government not be in the talks.

In interview with The Mercury, Senator Insulza was convinced that “we can agree on a good Constitution in which the great majority of the country feels represented.” That is the end, he stressed, and explained that “that means a lot of concessions because that phrase that the squadrons sail at the speed of the slowest ship is real.”

“So that no one is left behind and a large part of Chileans feel represented, we have to make concessions and not immediately obtain things that one has in their political program,” he added.

For the socialist parliamentarian, who is optimistic about the possibility of an agreement although he does not believe that a new Magna Carta will be ready before September 11 of next year, “it is a concern if (the agreement) takes a long time.”

“It would be a pity that after so many years we are left with a rejection and forget about the matter, it would be very negative for the country in its future,” said the legislator and head of the committee of socialist senators who must participate in the talks for the new constituent process.

The former head of the Segpres of the government of Eduardo Frei Ruiz-Tagle and former Minister of the Interior under the mandate of Ricardo Lagos, said he hopes that the lesson will be learned after the crucial election on September 4.

“I hope that the lesson is simply learned. When there is an exit plebiscite, it is better to seek consensus and not apply the steamroller to those who disagree with one,” he concluded.
