The senator and historical militant of the Christian Democracy (DC), Francisco Huenchumilla, critically addressed the departure of Ximena Rincón and Matías Walker from the party, who left the phalanx accusing that they made “many efforts to recover civic friendship in the party, but the board’s response has been permanent censorship”.
“I call on them to have a little humility. What a proud thing that they rebel against what was agreed by a national meeting of the party and simply be the standard bearers of the right in the Rejection, and then appear with the extreme right, with the Republicans, making a point of the press. What great arrogance is that. So, in life one must have a little more humility, because nobody has the truth in a little box kept on their desk”, sentenced the DC legislator, in Interview with CNNChile.

“All militants, especially the most prominent, have to set an example of discipline, an example of humility, not an example of arrogance (…) mine is nothing personal, it’s a political issue,” added Senator Huenchumilla, emphasizing the participation “with the right” of Rincón and Walker in the parallel dialogue table of the constitutional process, together with representatives of the People’s Party (PDG) and Republicans (PRep), at the beginning of October.
And he questioned: “Why do two important senators, along with other representatives, make the decision to leave DC?” In his opinion, there are two main reasons. The first, Huenchumilla explained, is due to the fact that the DC, in the last 20 years, “was losing the battle of ideas and was winning the operation, the internal machinery, control of power, control of the party, access to public office, and patronage”.
The second reason would be a “rightward shift” of the community, especially, he said, “when its main representatives, many economists, high-ranking state officials, ended up on the boards of large companies.”
“When the DC board said I Approve and well-known people rebelled against it, they did not abide by what was decided in the board and they were the banners of Rejection, but not with their own movement in front of the right but with the right,” he lashed out.
For Senator DC, the constitutional plebiscite of September 4 revealed a “sad reality” within the Christian Democracy: the existence of “two faces”; one center-left and one center-right. In that sense, he considered that the departure of Rincón and Walker pointing to the board is simply an “excuse”.
It is worth mentioning that, although it has not yet been made official and more details are expected to be released next week, the DC militants who opted for the Rejection option in the last exit plebiscite seek to become a new center-left benchmark under the name of the Democratic Party of Chile.
