After two years of suspension due to the covid-19 pandemic, the Senate held this Monday (27), a solemn session for the inauguration of young senators and for the election of the Young Senator Table 2022.
Until July 1st, the 27 young students selected within the program, with their respective teachers, will participate in the so-called Legislative Experience Week. During this period, the group will experience the process of discussion and elaboration of legislative suggestions. The work of young people simulates the role of senators in a four-day legislature.
Schedule
The program began today with the inauguration and election of the Board and will end with the approval of the projects and their publication in the Diário do Senado. On Tuesday (28), in addition to the committee meetings, the young people will visit the premises of the National Congress and visit the Cathedral and the Planalto Palace. On Wednesday (29), there will be a meeting with Senator Randolfe Rodrigues (Rede-AP) and with professor and writer Eduardo Bueno, in which the theme will be the bicentennial of the Independence of Brazil — which was the theme of the writing of this year.
The committee meetings will continue on Thursday (30), the day on which the students will also have an audience with the president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco, and will accompany the opening of the exhibition by Agência Senado and Rádio Senado. On Friday (1st), there will be the official photo session, lectures and the final meeting, which will take place in the Senate Plenary.
The professors who have been accompanying the students also participate in a good part of the programming with the young senators. They will, however, have specific activities such as the presentation of the e-Citizenship Portal, on Monday, and a lecture on the legislative process, on Tuesday. On Wednesday, the teachers will attend a lecture on teaching and education for the strengthening of citizenship. On Thursday, they will learn a little more about assertive and empathic communication.
Since the beginning of the program, 54 proposals have already been presented to the collegiate, 40 of which were accepted and passed through as bills and two followed as proposals for amendments to the Constitution (PECs).

According to the program’s coordinator, Antônio Carlos Burity, one of the novelties of this edition was the graduation session, before the inauguration ceremony. For the coordinator, the program is a special opportunity for the student, as it opens up the possibility of many experiences and knowledge. He highlighted what he called the “capillarity of the young senator”, citing that many of those selected come from cities in the interior, often do not even know the capital of the state itself and come to Brasília by plane, to participate in a legislative week.
“The profile of the young senator is that of a student from the countryside. We are talking about inclusion. These young people are winners and deserve all our recognition,” he highlighted.
Women
In this edition, among the 27 selected there are 19 girls. Burity said the number is not surprising, as women have always had a prominent role within the show. For him, the representation shows a special interest of women in politics, and can indicate a greater awareness for society.
