Senate ratifies Ángel Valencia as National Prosecutor of the Public Ministry

After a marathon day, the Senate Chamber approved the lawyer Ángel Valencia -the third letter from President Gabriel Boric after the failures of José Morales and Marta Herrera- as the next National Prosecutor.

After 100 days, the Public Ministry once again has a leader, after the senators approved by 40 votes in favor, 3 against and 6 abstentions the name of Valencia, who arrived at the Senate Chamber with a positive report.

Only Senators Carmen Gloria Aravena (IND), Loreto Carvajal (PPD) and Senator Alejandro Kusanovic (IND) voted against. Another name, like the compadre from Valencia, Álvaro Elizalde (PS), was not disqualified but he did abstain, despite emphasizing Valencia’s track record and ability to assume the position and that, according to Senate regulations, it was not necessary to be disabled

In the ruling party, practically everyone squared with the option chosen by President Gabriel Boric, even some who had slipped votes against before the day, such as DC Iván Flores, who ended up voting in favor. In the opposition, the votes were entirely in favor, since Valencia was a name that generated consensus in the hosts of Chile Vamos, considering it the candidate of Piñerismo.

After the vote, Minister Tohá said that there was “nothing to celebrate” but that they had to “get to work.”

There were about 9 hours of extensive debate and claims, which began first with the presentation of the Minister of the Interior, Carolina Tohá – who was one of her clients through the Espina, Zepeda & Acosta law firm, whom she defended in the case Publicam in 2006-, and a round with the main detractors of Valencia in the Senate, Loreto Carvajal (PPD) and Yasna Provoste (DC).

Subsequently came the exhibition from Valencia, who was consulted for technical aspects and for his controversial defenses of victimizers.
