Finally, no later than February 12, 2025, the Senate will compile the lists of candidates and send them to the National Electoral Institute (INE) so that the latter can organize the election process.
In the discussion, the opposition pointed out that the reform of the Judiciary, from which the call to elect candidates for judges is derived, arose from revenge on the part of the former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
The coordinator of the Citizen Movement, Clemente Castañeda, pointed out that this call is the epitaph of the balance of powers in Mexico. He also recalled that his bench has indicated that the reform to the Judiciary approved by Morena is not what the country needs, as he said that what is behind these constitutional changes is a “whim.”
“Behind this reform is the attempt to politically capture the Judiciary. The entire reform is made to take revenge for the fact that on many occasions this Judicial Branch contradicted the then President López Obrador and demonstrated, rightly or wrongly, a space for autonomy and institutional decision-making,” mentioned the Emecista.
Also in this position was the PRI member Carolina Viggiano, who assured that Morena will be the one who actually chooses the candidates for judges, since this party heads two of the three Powers of the Union.
“This is not a reform for justice, it is an unjust reform of the Judiciary, a revenge that is born from fraud, from the overrepresentation that gives them a majority that they do not have. It is not true that they have already divorced economic power from political power. It is also false that people are going to choose who will be their judges, a leadership will choose them, Morena will choose them,” emphasized the PRI senator.
Otherwise, Morena’s coordinator in the Senate, Adán Augusto López, described it as an “absurd opposition tantrum” lasting four hours – in reference to the legislators of the PAN, PRI and MC – for not signing said call to elect the candidates.
“What we are discussing at this moment in reality there is no room for any discussion. What this Senate is going to issue today is the call and we will do so by complying in terms of the constitutional reform that requires us. What we are seeing is a parade of hypocrisies. There are those who think that they are defending the Nation just because it is about coming to this forum to say that Morena is going to keep the Judiciary, no, and I tell you frankly, we are certainly not the same,” said senator.
Meanwhile, the Morenista Félix Salgado pointed out the PAN and MC legislators for not having attended the session on Saturday, October 12, when the Senate held a raffle to elect the positions of judges and ministers who will be in the 2025 election process. and in 2027; Furthermore, he said that for the first time “the people” will elect the judges by direct vote.
“What is happening with this call is that it is putting an end to a reign of corruption and impunity. For many years you treated the country as a minor. At no time is anyone being chosen. They do not have to say that the positions of ministers, magistrates or judges are being chosen. That is not the case, and they know the terms of the call,” said the Morenista.
