The members of the Senate Democratic Block presented a resolution to condemn the massive pardons of President Donald Trump to the participants of the Capitol assault on January 6.
The resolution, which also includes senators Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Angus King (I-ME), the independents that are part of the Democratic block, initially had 46 sponsors.
One of the main sponsor, Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) will seek to approve the resolution at the end of this week. If this occurs, it would have no legally binding effect, but I would express the disapproval of the Senate of Trump’s action.
“President Trump’s first day was to let the violent criminals who hit police officers out of prison,” said Senator Tina Smith (Democrat for Minnesota). “These are people who planned an insurrection, attacked police officers with metal canes, extinguishers, wooden planks and even admitted these crimes and declared themselves guilty in court.”
The public speech on the assault on the Capitol “has been distorted,” says Federal Republican judge
Trump had repeatedly committed to granting indults to the defendants of January 6, whom he has called “hostages.” He has affirmed without foundation that they did not receive due process.
In the weeks prior to his sworn, he and vice president JD Vance suggested that the cases would be reviewed individually, and that some of the defendants convicted of more violent crimes would be excluded.
However, then Trump issued an pardon for 1,500 people without apparent review, including hundreds of individuals who assaulted police officers; Their only measure of moderation was to issue switches instead of pardons for paramilitary leaders Oath Keepers and Proud Boys convicted of sedicious conspiracy, who released them from prison but did not eliminate their criminal record.
Some Republican members of Congress have been uncomfortable with Trump’s pardons, since the January 6 attack constituted a violent threat against their own security for doing their job.
