In a quick and symbolic vote, the Senate approved this Tuesday (10) the federal intervention in public security in the Federal District (DF), decreed by the President of the Republic, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva last Sunday (8). The text was approved yesterday (9) by the Chamber of Deputies. The president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), who interrupted his vacation in France and returned to Brasília yesterday, commanded the session.
Despite being in effect since Sunday (8), the intervention needed to be confirmed by the National Congress.
The rapporteur for the matter in the House, Senator Davi Alcolumbre (União-AP), highlighted the need for the measure, which he classified as “exceptional and tough, but necessary, in view of the very serious acts of vandalism that occurred on Sunday in the Federal District, which, unfortunately, everyone witnessed it, permeated by complete disorder, yes, public disorder and insecurity for the entire population”, said Alcolumbre.
The intervention in public security in the Federal District is valid until January 31, 2023, with the aim of ending the “serious compromise and invasion of public buildings”.
The measure, which will be enacted by the National Congress, was voted against by senators Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ), Carlos Viana (PL-MG), Carlos Portinho (PL-RJ), Luiz Carlos Heinze (PP-RS), Eduardo Girão (Podemos-CE), Plínio Valério (PSDB-AM), Styvenson Valentim (Podemos-RN) and Zequinha Marinho (PL-PA), all supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro.
intervenor
The Executive Secretary of the Ministry of Justice, Ricardo Capelli, was appointed intervenor and will have operational control of all district public security bodies in the period. He will be responsible for all activities directly or indirectly related to security in the Federal District.
Capelli will be subordinate to the Federal Executive and will be able to request financial, technological, structural and human resources from the DF and civil and military bodies of the federal public administration to achieve the objectives of the intervention.
