The Foreign Relations and Environment Committees of the Senate approved on Monday the Escazú Agreement, an environmental treaty for Latin America and the Caribbean whose ratification project was submitted in March by the government of the President Gabriel Boric.
The project obtained seven votes in favor and two abstentions. The commissions dispatched the initiative to the Senate Chamber, which will vote on its ratification on Tuesday afternoon.

The Escazú Agreement seeks to guarantee the implementation of the rights of access to environmental information, public participation in environmental decision-making processes and access to justice in environmental matters, indicates article 1 of the text.
After the approval of the ratification project in the commissions, the Minister of the Environment, Maisa Rojascommented that “we are very happy with this important step that confirms the urgency of having a treaty that allows people to make better decisions and guarantee the human right to live in a healthy environment”.
“Ultimately, the agreement will help us provide greater well-being to Chilean men and women and especially to environmental defenders,” added the Secretary of State.
Let us remember that the project was approved on May 11 by the Chamber of Deputies and Deputies, dispatching it to the Senate.
So far, a total of 12 countries have ratified the agreement, making them party states. These are Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Bolivia, Ecuador, Guyana, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, and Uruguay.
