The Senate candidate for Popular Force, Carlos Tubinois at the center of controversy after speaking out against therapeutic abortion and questioning the termination of pregnancy even in cases of rape.
His statements, released during a recent public intervention, have provoked a wave of criticism from various social and political sectors.
Tubino maintained that the problem of child and adolescent pregnancy should be addressed mainly through education and not through the interruption of pregnancy, even when it comes to cases of sexual violence.
“In relation to child pregnancy, which is a problem that I have seen up close in the Ucayali region, there has to be a lot of important educational work here. In a world where today there is so much competition to get a job, to get out of poverty, with decent jobs, it is an issue that does have to be addressed, but above all with education”stated the former legislator.
Asked specifically about therapeutic abortion – legal in Peru for more than a century when the life or health of the mother is at risk – Tubino reaffirmed his opposite position.
“I don’t believe in abortion for rape, because even when issues of rape are played out judicially, there are many things that are left with a loose rag here, a loose rag there, accusations that are sometimes false. These are not always rapes. Sometimes they are also ‘nights of pleasure’ and then a rape complaint is filed.”, he stated.
His words have been harshly questioned by feminist groups, human rights organizations and users on social networks, who consider that they minimize sexual violence and re-victimize women and girls.
