Senate approves support for men to prevent domestic violence

The Senate approved, this Tuesday (15), a bill that encourages actions of assistance to men to prevent cases of violence against women. The project aims to provide assistance to the man, in order to give him support to avoid possible episodes of domestic violence. The text also provides free telephone service and a network of psychosocial care for men’s mental health. Now, the project goes to the Chamber of Deputies.Senate approves support for men to prevent domestic violence

The objective of the project is to combat the sexist culture, in which the genders are hierarchical, with the woman being submissive to the man, and to offer emotional support to the man, to help him reject behaviors that reinforce such behavior.

“Many men live with the antagonistic pressures of ingrained machismo, bequeathed by our patriarchal culture, and of respect for the fundamental rights of women, which are not their property and are not subject to their guardianship, as well established in the doctrine of human rights and democracy”, said the project’s rapporteur, Leila Barros (Citizenship-DF).

According to the project, it will be up to the Unified Health System (SUS) to maintain programs or actions for men’s mental health care aimed at preventing violence against women.

The SUS may establish partnerships with public administration bodies, non-profit organizations and private services, so that they act in a complementary and integrated way to the psychosocial care network.
