The Senate of the Republic approved this Wednesday in a single reading and unanimously 45 days of state of emergency for 12 provinces of the Dominican Republic affected by the hurricane Fionaaccepting the request of the Executive power.
The project has already been sanctioned by the deputies and will be sent to the Executive power for later enactment or observation.
Of the 27 senators present, all said yes to the piece.
Most affected provinces
The provinces most affected last Monday, September 19 by the hurricane Fiona They are: La Altagracia, La Romana, San Pedro de Macorís, Santo Domingo, El Seibo, Hato Mayor, Monte Plata, Duarte, La Vega, Santiago, Samaná and María Trinidad Sánchez.
“This is the case of the damage caused by the hurricane Fionawhich, in addition to the destruction of bridges, highways, local roads and homes, has caused the interruption of basic services to hundreds of thousands of people and isolation between dozens of communities in the interior, while it has displaced more than 40,000 people from their homes”, says the motivation letter sent by President Luis Abinader to National Congress.
It details that, although the hurricane Fiona transited last Monday the 19th through a portion of the national territory, its repercussions, which have a chain effect, will continue for weeks, even affecting provinces that were not necessarily on the free route of this atmospheric phenomenon.
The Senate It is pending to appoint the members of a bicameral commission created by the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Alfred Pachecoto monitor and control the State resources allocated to the provinces included in the state of emergency.
