The Senate approved, this Wednesday (3), a proposal that obliges the federal government to provide furniture, equipment and teaching materials appropriate to the age and specific needs of each public school student. The text goes to the presidential sanction.
The project makes mandatory the availability, in basic education and higher education institutions, of quality furniture, suitable for the age of the students and their specific use (right-handed, left-handed), as well as the needs of people with disabilities.
When presenting the report, Senator Styvenson Valentim (Podes-RN) recalled that the project has been going through the National Congress for more than 13 years, a period in which a National Education Plan (2001-2011) was concluded and another one began to be implemented. (2014-2024). For him, improving the quality of education requires the implementation of an infrastructure with facilities that are minimally compatible with the needs of students.
“It is a measure of qualification of education, which should benefit every Brazilian. A project is taken care of with a simple, direct guideline that is perfectly harmonized with the LDB. Hence the inevitable reflection: the ideal would be that this project no longer makes sense in our reality, but, unfortunately, it is not what we see in practice”, said the senator, when recommending the approval of the project only with wording amendments, without changing the content.
