As the Chamber of Deputies did hours before, the Senate approved a new extension of the constitutional State of Exception in the southern part of the country. Specifically, the measure was endorsed with 34 votes in favor and 5 abstentions, so it will remain in force until next January 28.
In the instance, among those who abstained are senators Paulina Núñez (RN) and Luz Ebensperger (UDI), and parliamentarian Miguel Durana, who have requested greater efforts on the northern border to address the migration crisis. Also Senator María José Gatica (RN) and Senator Yasna Provoste (DC).

The session had no discussion except for some parliamentarians who intervened to explain their vote in favor despite the existence of violent situations in the southern zone.
In this line, the Minister of the Interior, Carolina Tohá, reported that the Constitution Commission is already processing the project that allows avoiding extensions every 15 days, allowing a longer period. After the legislative recess in February, she announced that they will share with Congress a “medium-term view” on the conditions in which it will be possible to withdraw the State of Exception.
“We do not believe that it is a favorable conversation now because summer is a very complex period in the area,” said the Secretary of State.
