The Chamber of the Senate approved in general the project of constitutional reform that enables the new constituent process. However, voting will continue tomorrow Wednesday from 2:00 p.m.
Specifically, the project was endorsed with 42 votes in favor, 7 against and one abstention from Senator Fabiola Campillai.
Among the seven people who voted against the measure are independent-RN senators Juan Castro, Kenneth Pugh and Carmen Gloria Aravena. In addition to Senator Rojo Edwards (Republicans) and the UDI José Miguel Durana.
After the approval of the measure, the president of the Senate, Álvaro Elizalde, maintained that “we are talking about a project that has had, in the Senate room, the support of 84% of the senators. I insist, because it is rarely sees such transversal and categorical support in a project of this nature”.
“84% of the senators in office have voted in favor of this initiative. This shows the transversal support of the Agreement by Chile and the importance of advancing towards the new constituent process,” Elizalde added.
The measure, which has immediate discussion, seeks to generate a new mechanism for drafting the Fundamental Charter through the creation of a Constitutional Council of 50 members, equal, which will begin to function on June 7.
The project will be discussed in three sessions. The first today, the second tomorrow at about 2:00 p.m., where indications will be entered and reviewed, and the last one is called for 5:00 p.m. and will be until full dispatch.
