Senate approves extension of the State of Exception in two provinces of Biobío and in all of La Araucanía

The Senate approved this Monday afternoon a new extension -for 15 additional days- of the State of Exception, in force in the provinces of Biobío and Arauco, in the Biobío Region, and throughout La Araucanía. Earlier, the Chamber of Deputies and Deputies approved the extension of the measure, so the extension will be effective.

The Senate approved the Government’s request – the thirteenth presented by La Moneda – with 24 votes in favor, six against and three abstentions. Meanwhile, the Lower House approved it with 86 votes in favor, 20 against and six abstentions.

The votes against in the Senate were Karim Bianchi (IND), Fabiola Campillai (IND), light ebensperger (UDI), Ivan Flores (DC), Maria Jose Gatica (RN) and Paulina Nunez (RN).

From the Executive they indicated that the State of Exception “has promoted inter-institutional coordination between the police, the Armed Forces and the Government, which has made it possible to deter the occurrence of violent events and disorders.”

The Government issued the measure for the first time on May 16, 2022. Later, it was extended by decree. Subsequently, complying with the constitutional order, he asked Congress to extend the State of Exception.

Currently, the twelfth extension request is in force, which expires this Monday.
