Senate approves a one-year increase in the mandate of mayors

The Chamber of Senators approved the bill “That extends by one year the term of office of the municipal authorities elected in the 2021 elections.”

Desirée Masi, national senator for the PDP, questioned that the people who voted for these authorities did so for a period of four years, not five.

“What we did is debatable, but in the face of uncertainty, the precautionary principle governs. What we did is questionable. It was not only the health issue. There was a suspension of transfers, subsidies, contributions. The mayors themselves asked for it”, he stated.

With 24 votes for approval, 12 for rejection, one abstention and eight absences, the initiative was sanctioned and goes to the Executive for its promulgation or veto.
