Senasa confirms cases of avian influenza and expands controls in Córdoba, Salta and Entre Ríos

He National Agri-Food Health and Quality Service (Senasa) reinforced epidemiological surveillance controls in light of the detection of cases of avian influenza in order to prevent the spread of the disease.

In the provinces of Córdoba and Salta, Senasa is attending to cases in the backyardcarries out surveys in the areas where positive cases were detected and continues raking and surveillance in both territories, while confirming new cases of avian influenza (AI) H5 in the Cordoba town of Alejo Ledesma and on the way to La Isla, in the Salta department of Cerrillos.

In the Cordoba town the detection was in backyard turkeys -a term that accounts for the raising of animals or birds in private residences- and in the area of ​​Salta it corresponded to a backyard hen.

These cases add to another case of avian influenza (AI) H5 detected in two wild ducks found dead in the Las Mojarras lagoon, in the Cordovan department of General San Martín.

In addition, in the framework of the declared health emergency, in the province of Entre Ríos, preventive controls are carried out on the border with Uruguay, where a case was detected in the Maldonado department.

The staff verified the general condition of the animals that were on the property, took samples to be analyzed at the Senasa Laboratory located in Martínez, Buenos Aires province, which consisted of cloacal swabs from backyard birds.

Also, They delimited a perimeter around the property to rake and verify possible dead birds or those with symptoms compatible with the disease.; while they interviewed neighbors, owners of the establishment and those who made the notifications. Within this framework, 7 notifications were attended to, samples were taken and sent to the laboratory.

In this context, national and regional authorities and technicians from Senasa participated in a virtual meeting with officials and technicians from the Province in which the situation of influenza in Argentina and specifically in Córdoba was reviewed and comments were exchanged on the actions between the institutions afterwards. of confirmed the first positive case.

The Vice President of Senasa, Rodolfo Acerbi, thanked the articulation and the inter-institutional coordinated work in the field, during the meeting which also participated, for Senasa, its national director of Animal Health, Ximena Melón, the national directors of Operations, Pablo Cortese, and from the Córdoba Regional Center, Gusravo Zabaletta, along with professionals from the Avian Health Program.

In Salta, Senasa interdicted the backyard establishment where the positive occurred and adopted sanitary actions while, in coordination with the Ministry of Production of the Provinceand personnel from the National Institute of Agricultural Technology (INTA) established a containment zone based on detection and epidemiologically related suspicions.

In addition, route controls were reinforced in collaboration with the National Gendarmerie to delimit the area.

In Entre Ríos, within the framework of the actions foreseen by the declared national health emergency, Senasa continues with the surveillance actions and reinforced border controls in the Province, increasing the personnel that provides functions at the points of entry into the country, at the border with Uruguay, since a case of AI was registered in that country.

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) is a high-impact disease in poultry production that affects both poultry (hens, roosters, chickens, ducks, turkeys, and geese) like wild and domestic birds.
