Between Monday, January 27 and Wednesday, January 29, the regions of the northern and central coast of Peru will face a significant increase in temperatures during the dayreaching values of up to 37 °C in Tumbes, Piura and Lambayeque, and 32 °C in La Libertad, Áncash and Lima, according to meteorological notice No. 032 of the National Meteorology and Hydrology Service (Senamhi).
Orange alert for extreme heat
The Senamhi issued an orange alert for the departments of Tumbes, Piura, Lambayeque, La Libertad, Áncash, Lima, Cajamarca and Callao due to this climatic phenomenon. The following temperatures are expected:
- Tumbes, Piura and Lambayeque: Between 31 °C and 37 °C.
- La Libertad and Ancash: Between 28 °C and 32 °C.
- Metropolitan Lima and Callao: Between 27 °C and 30 °C.
In addition to high temperatures, the forecast indicates that there will be wind gusts of up to 40 km/h and little cloudiness during the day, which will intensify ultraviolet radiation, increasing the health risk for those directly exposed to the sun.
UV radiation risks
The combination of extreme heat and high UV radiation endangers the most vulnerable populations, such as children, older adults, and people with pre-existing conditions. Senamhi urges the population to take precautions against this situation, which could cause heat stroke, dehydration and severe damage to the skin.
Recommendations for the population
In this scenario, it is recommended:
- Avoid direct exposure to the sun. Especially between 10 am and 4 pm, when UV radiation is most intense.
- Use sunscreen. Apply it with a protection factor greater than 30 and reapply it every two hours.
- Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water and avoid alcoholic or sugary drinks that can cause dehydration.
- Wear appropriate clothing. Opt for lightweight, light-colored clothing, wide-brimmed hats, and glasses with UV filters.
- Avoid intense physical activities. Performing heavy exercise or work outdoors can increase the risk of heat exhaustion.
