The explained the climatic reasons that caused the strange whirlpool of sand or “Dust Devil”, which surprised all those present at the soccer final in the Tambogrande district, in the Piura region.

According to the weather entity, the “Dust Devil” is a whirlwind that appears under sunny conditions and features wind currents that go from the bottom to the top.

These develop when a strong downdraft reaches the ground causing a clockwise eddy. It was also detailed that they are generally harmless (doing no physical harm).

This whirlpool of sand can be between 50 cm and 10 meters wide, in addition, in some cases it reaches a height of up to 1,000 meters.

“’Dust devil’ is when a whirlwind forms on a sandy surface; while a waterspout is on a liquid surface such as a lake”, pointed out the Senamhi.
