He National Service of Meteorology and Hydrology of Peru (Senamhi) activated a red alert due to the extreme increase in daytime temperatures that will affect 19 regions of the country between Wednesday, December 10 and Friday, December 12. According to the Notice No. 440temperatures will reach up to 38 degrees Celsius in the Peruvian mountains, a phenomenon that will be accompanied by a marked increase in ultraviolet radiation and strong gusts of wind.
Three days of intense heat in the mountains
The meteorological agency warned that during this period there will be a thermal increase of moderate to extreme intensity in the mountain areas, with atmospheric conditions that will favor the intensification of the heat. The low cloud cover expected towards midday will allow a greater influx of solar radiation, which will significantly increase ultraviolet (UV) radiation levels throughout the Andean region.
In addition to high temperatures, gusts of wind with speeds close to 45 kilometers per hour are expected, mainly during the afternoon hours, which could generate uncomfortable conditions for the population and additional risks in exposed areas.

The red alert issued by the Senamhi It covers 19 departments of the country: Amazonas, Áncash, Apurímac, Arequipa, Ayacucho, Cajamarca, Cusco, Huancavelica, Huánuco, Junín, La Libertad, Lambayeque, Lima, Moquegua, Pasco, Piura, Puno, San Martín and Tacna. These regions must take special precautions against increased temperatures and ultraviolet radiation.
The authorities recommend that the population stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun during the hours of greatest intensity (between 11:00 am and 3:00 pm), use sunscreen, light and light-colored clothing, as well as consume fresh foods to counteract the effects of extreme heat.
