The Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) proposed a plan to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 30 percent by 2030 and up to 40 percent in a conditional manner, within the framework of the meeting between the president Andrés Manuel López Obrador and John Kerry, United States special envoy for climate change.

The agency headed by María Luisa Albores explained that in order to reach the 30 percent goal, 35 measures have been identified in all economic sectors, classified into three categories: natural solutions, low-carbon transport, and industrial regulation and development.

Through them, he said, an estimated total annual mitigation of 88.9 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO2e) can be achieved.

Official data indicates that in 2015 Mexico emitted 683 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent.

As part of the natural solutions, Semarnat mentioned the Sembrando Vida program with an annual mitigation of 4 million tons of carbon dioxide; the creation of new Protected Natural Areas, which would reduce 8 tons of carbon dioxide per year, as well as the National Blue Carbon Strategy, with an annual contribution of 15 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent.

Regarding low-carbon transport, the head of Semarnat commented that they are working on the development of strategies for electromobility, remote work and rail transport.

In the latter, the Mayan Train stands out, where there is an opportunity to reduce 0.4 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent per year by 2030.
