The National Drug Control Directorate (DNCD) reported this Saturday that it seized 2,198 packages of alleged cocainewith an approximate weight of 2.2 tons, in the Caucedo Multimodal Portone of the most important points for trafficking of illicit substances in the country.
The shipment was hidden in boxes of clothing and sports shoes, wrapped in different colored adhesive tape.
According to the DNCDthe packages came from Panama and had the port of Antwerp, in Belgium, as their final destination.
The operation, which lasted more than 12 hours, included the inspection of dozens of containers in transit through the country. X-ray machines detected suspicious images on one of the containers, allowing the drugs to be located.
Carlos Devers, spokesperson for the DNCDindicated that this is the “largest volume” shipment confiscated in the country’s history.
Likewise, he specified that national agencies, in collaboration with international organizations, have initiated an expanded investigation in relation to the case. So far, there are no arrests due to the failed shipment.
The packages will be sent to the National Institute of Forensic Sciences (Inacif) to determine the exact type and weight of the substance.
