The acting governor of the Federal District, Celina Leão, said on Wednesday night (13) that, after the explosions at Praça dos Três Poderes, all areas of public authorities in Brasília, including Esplanada dos Ministérios, were reinforced. “We have reinforced all security at Palácio do Planalto, Alvorada, the official residence and also [as áreas dos] powers,” he said.
She stated that the areas of the attacks were isolated with a specialized team. “We have a bomb disposal squad that trains all over Brazil. The Civil Police is taking care of the intelligence part, collecting data, finding out if there are any further ramifications or any (new) situations as well.”
Large perimeter
The Executive Secretary of Public Security, Alexandre Patury, also present at the press conference, assured that immediately when the case occurred, the police arrived immediately. In the terrorist attacks of January 8 last year, local police were criticized for the delay in responding to the crimes. “We can assure you that the Military Police acted immediately. We have very large perimeter security in the Esplanada area.”
The commander of the DF Military Police, Colonel Ana Paula Barros, recalled that the first concern was to identify whether there would be victims in the areas of the explosions. The governor reinforced that a Civil Police investigation is taking place in parallel with that of the Federal Police. The investigations will be forwarded to the Federal Supreme Court.
Celina Leão said that the DF has the best public security in Brazil. “What we need to understand is that acts like this, carried out by lone wolves, happen in the most protected places in the world.”
