The victim was beaten with a blunt object after refusing to hand over money; The alleged attacker fled the scene.
The authorities are investigating the death of Sergio Alfredo Zabala Galeano, a 62-year-old security guard who died after being attacked in the La Candelaria commune, in the center of Medellín. According to official information, the man was attacked and died days later due to the severity of his injuries.
According to the preliminary report, the events occurred on Oriental Avenue, when the victim was approached by a street dweller, who asked him for money. When he refused to hand him over, the aggressor allegedly hit him with a blunt object, causing multiple bruises on his head, and then fled the scene.

After the attack, the security guard was helped and taken by ambulance to the Pablo Tobón Uribe Hospital where he remained under medical observation. However, despite the efforts of health personnel, he died due to his injuries.
Special group investigates the homicide
The authorities indicated that both the events and the identification of the person responsible remain under investigation. Judicial Police units are carrying out the collection of testimonies and the analysis of security cameras in the sector, in order to clarify what happened and find the whereabouts of the alleged aggressor.

This case revives concern about other recent acts of violence and security in public spaces in the Aburrá Valley. Cases such as that of Esteban Yépez, murdered in August 2025 in Itagüí, have reactivated the debate on the need to strengthen comprehensive care strategies for homeless people, as well as prevention, surveillance and timely response mechanisms to acts of violence.
