Security Council holds emergency meeting after attacks on Iran

The Security Council of the United Nations (UN) holds an emergency meeting, this Saturday (28), on the attacks in the Middle East. On the agenda at the meeting are the attacks carried out by the United States and Israel on Iran. The meeting is being broadcast live.Security Council holds emergency meeting after attacks on Iran

The Security Council, composed of 15 members, each entitled to one vote, is responsible for maintaining international peace and security.

The group takes the lead in determining whether a threat to peace or an act of aggression exists. It urges the parties to the dispute to resolve it by peaceful means and recommends methods of adjustment or terms of agreement. The council may resort to imposing sanctions or even authorizing the use of force to maintain or restore international peace and security.

According to the United Nations Charter, all Member States are obliged to comply with the council’s decisions.

In addition to the five permanent members – China, France, Russian Federation, United Kingdom and United States –, the following are part of the Security Council: Bahrain, Colombia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Denmark, Greece, Latvia, Liberia, Pakistan, Panama, Somalia. Each of them, with two-year terms.
