The Security Council of the United Nations (UN) today passed a resolution calling for an emergency meeting of the General Assembly to address Russia’s military action in Ukraine. There were 11 votes from Council members in favor of holding the emergency meeting of the General Assembly. Russia voted against and China, India and the United Arab Emirates abstained. The emergency meeting of the UN General Assembly will take place tomorrow (28).
At this afternoon’s meeting, the Security Council approved invoking a mechanism called Uniting for Peace, based on General Assembly Resolution 377, passed in 1950.
The resolution says that the General Assembly, made up of 193 member states, can also take action if the Security Council fails to act in the event of a threat or violation of the peace, or an act of aggression, due to the veto of one of its members. five permanent members.
The assembly may consider the matter immediately with the intention of making recommendations to member states to take collective action to maintain or restore international peace and security.
On Friday (25) Russia, one of five member countries with veto power, voted against a resolution condemning the invasion of Ukraine. This was the first time since 1982 that the Security Council called for an emergency session of the General Assembly.
