Representatives of the business sector of Santo Domingo Este rejected the intention of the mayor of that district, Dio Astacio, who intends to impose the payment of a business operation permit tax, ranging from RD$3,000 to RD$20,000.
The payment of this tax was established in 2011 with resolution 05-11, in the second period of the administration of the late mayor, Juan De los Santos.
In his swearing-in speech as president of the Multi-Enterprise Action Society (SAM), Andrés Tejada, argued that Astacio’s claim is a violation of Law 176-07 of the National District and Municipalities, which does not empower any chapter house to create taxes, in addition to the fact that it cannot have retroactive effects or create duplication of tax payments.
As well as, the business leader maintained, Article 93 of the Constitution of the Republic, which provides that only the National Congress has the power to create taxes.
During the event, Tejada presented a roadmap focused on modernization and union strengthening, highlighting the following pillars for his mandate: generational renewal and expanding the institution’s enrollment, thus actively integrating young entrepreneurs to ensure the dynamism and continuity of business leadership.
In addition, he reaffirmed his commitment to assume the firm defense of the business sector in the face of current economic challenges, promoting policies that are favorable to development.
