“Placing six monuments dedicated to indigenous women on Paseo de la Reforma is an act of historical justice and of deep symbolic meaning for the nation. It is not only about new sculptures in public space, but rather an explicit recognition of those who have sustained, from their communities and over the centuries, perhaps millennia, the cultural, social and spiritual life of Mexico,” said Sheinbaum.
On Paseo de la Reforma, we unveiled six sculptures dedicated to indigenous women rulers and fighters; It is an act of historic justice and of deep significance for the nation.

“These monuments, these sculptures, represent the greatness of indigenous women. Their wisdom transmitted from generation to generation, their bond with the land, their community forms of organization and the values that they have preserved even in the face of exclusion and violence, which are the values of the people of Mexico,” she added.

”To honor them in such an emblematic space is to recognize that cultural transmission does not belong to the past, but to the present and future of the country. Its presence in the heart of the capital city is also a firm symbol against racism, classism and machismo,” he explained.
President Sheinbaum said that the placement of these sculptures vindicates the role of women in the history of Mexico, “who historically were relegated, made invisible and victims of a historical silence that became a type of violence that subdues and slows down the transformation.”
He highlighted the importance of including Malintzin in the Paseo de las Heroinas in Reforma, who was pointed out as a symbol of betrayal in a story full of racism and machismo, when in reality she made use of her linguistic knowledge to survive in a context of violence.
“Recognizing it today is not opening old wounds, no. It is closing a historical debt,” he emphasized.
