Escape of alias “El Zorro” in Itagüí prison triggers alert for negligence and corruption, councilor denounces security crisis in the prison.
The prison security in Antioquia is in the eye of the hurricane after the recent escape of a dangerous convict from the Itagüí Prison, a fact that the councilor of Medellín, Claudia Carrasquilla, described as a serious security crisis and an act of institutional negligence.
The escaped inmate was identified as Darío Arcadio Zapata, alias “El Zorro” or “El Flaco”, a former guerrilla captured in 2016 who was serving a sentence of more than 30 years for kidnapping for ransom, extortion, forced displacement and conspiracy to commit a crime.
Councilor Carrasquilla, based on internal sources at the prison, warned that the escape, which occurred last December 8occurred in an environment of “extreme relaxation of controls.”

The sources indicated that, while the prisoner was escaping, an alleged party was being held in the prison in which leaders of criminal structures from the Aburrá Valley participated. According to the complaint, women, liquor and candles would be present at the celebration, allowing unrestricted circulation between patios and offices. It is even reported that several people spent the night in the educational areas.
The report details that alias “El Zorro” managed to escape from pavilion 2, crossed administrative areas, left through the usual entrance door for lawyers and jumped over a wall without any surveillance mechanism being activated.

Furthermore, an internal source revealed that the escape was planned, since Zapata was notified days before of a new accusation against him for eight homicides and a case of forced disappearance in Valdivia.
Carrasquilla emphasized that this situation goes beyond an isolated error: “This case reflects a major crisis in the prison systemparticularly in establishments where leaders of criminal structures and people linked to the so-called peace table remain. “There are clear signs here of negligence, permissiveness and possible acts of corruption.”
Given the seriousness of the events, the councilor announced that she will take the complaints to the control entities. Finally, he warned that this incident reflects the institutional fragility derived from the failed policy of “Total Peace” and announced permanent monitoring of the case.
