President Luis Lacalle Pou participated in the Annual Assembly of the Rincón del Cerro Agrarian Development and Defense Society, where he valued the actions implemented by the government for the agricultural sector.
During the pandemic “the engines of the economy did not turn off” and, although much remains to be done, Uruguay is on the right track, a situation that is reflected in “the numbers, reality and human geography,” he considered.
The members of the union reviewed the annual report of the institution and made a balance of the exercises from 2019 onwards. In addition, they elected new authorities.
Lacalle Pou recalled that he has been attending the assemblies of this society for 22 years and considered that it is “very good” to remember what was said in the electoral campaign. “It is the unwritten commitment that is assumed from a candidacy, then you have to carry it forward.” “It is obvious that these two years were marked by a pandemic, but it does not seem to us that we have to be redundant on the subject to make excuses, what had to be done was done, the resources were available and the Government continued marching and walking,” he said.
The president considered that the presence of the ministry authorities at the event represents the Executive’s commitment to the farming sector.

Lacalle said: “There is enormous economic uncertainty and there are some issues that put us above the economic, due to legal issues, and we are going to move forward,” referring to the situation of the Metropolitan Agrifood Unit (UAM).
Regarding the creation of the National Farm Institute, he maintained: “To think that an institute starts, we train it and it runs is not understanding the maturation of institutions.” However, he announced that the Government committed in the Rendering of Accounts the necessary funds for the start-up of that institution.
The president also valued other government actions aimed at solving difficulties in the agricultural and farming sector, such as the situation of the Caputto citrus company, in Salto. “The Government in all its institutions, with great force in the Banco República, tried to keep that from dismembering, and today in Salto and surrounding areas there is a new hope that this undertaking, with other capitals, will continue, they are actions that there are to celebrate as a society,” he said.
He also highlighted the contributions of the Government for the construction of the Horticultural Central of the North, which is being built in Salto and which will be “a pole of real decentralization in the north of the country.”
Lacalle said: “We are on the right track; the numbers, the figures, the reality, the human geography, say that, despite the setback we suffered, we are on the right track”. He attributed this situation to the fact that “we did not let the engines of the economy turn off” and that “the Government dedicated itself to raising those who fell, it did not oppose social assistance, which doubled, despite Many people”.
