Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman will visit Turkey on June 22, a senior official told AFP on condition of anonymity on Friday, in a sign that the two countries are putting behind them tensions over the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.
This is the prince’s first visit to Turkey since the assassination at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in October 2018 whose death shocked the world and strained ties between these rival regional powers.
The program of the visit will be announced “during the course of the weekend,” the official source said.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan visited Saudi Arabia at the end of April and met with the crown prince before traveling to Mecca.
Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who was residing in the United States, was killed and dismembered in the kingdom’s consulate in Istanbul and his remains have never been found.
After the shock generated by the crime, Erdogan said that “the highest levels” of the Saudi government were involved and the opening of a local investigation, the judicial process and the details given to the international press annoyed the kingdom.
