Saturday of blackouts in Cuba: 1,084 MW affected for peak hours forecast

Apagones, Cuba

MIAMI, United States. — The Electric Union of Cuba (UNE) predicted a deficit of more than 1,000 megawatts (MW) for the peak hours of this Saturday, in which interruptions of the electrical service are expected in all the provinces of the country.

A note of the state company indicates that for today a maximum affectation of 980 MW is expected during daytime hours due to breakdowns and repairs that are carried out in several thermoelectric plants on the Island.

According to the UNE, units 6, 7 and 8 of the CTE Mariel (Artemisa), the CTE unit Otto Parellada (Havana), units 4 and 5 of the CTE Nuevitas (Camagüey) and units 1 and 2 of the CTE Felton (Holguín).

The information from the state entity adds that unit 3 of the CTE Renté (Santiago de Cuba) is undergoing maintenance.

Due to the problems in the thermoelectric plants, the limitations in thermal generation remain, with a deficit of 534 MW.

Regarding distributed generation, the UNE stated that “1,081 MW are unavailable due to breakdown and 486 MW are undergoing maintenance”.

For peak hours, the entrance of unit 8 of the CTE Mariel is expected, which will contribute 84 MW to the National Electric System. The load increase in unit 3 of the CTE Cienfuegos is also expected, which will contribute another 30 MW, as well as the use of 142 MW in diesel engines.

“With this forecast, an availability of 2,186 MW and a maximum demand of 3,200 MW are estimated for peak hours, for a deficit of 1,014 MW, so if the forecast conditions are maintained, an affectation of 1,084 MW is forecast at the peak,” adds the statement.

The UNE indicated that this Friday there were affectations in the service due to a deficit in generation capacity during 24 hours a day. The maximum impact was 1,190 MW at 10:50 p.m., coinciding with peak hours.
