The nationalist senator John Sartori presented a bill proposing the creation of a special regime for entry, permanence and work in Uruguay of the “digital nomads”, specifically designed to promote the country as a center for remote work and reception for this type of people, thus attracting a “regulated and integrated migration for the development of the country.

“After the pandemic, digitization and teleworking have become a trend at the business level and workers tend to settle in countries that offer them the best residence and visa conditions,” stated the legislator in the text, to which he agreed The Observer.

Sartori defines the “digital nomad” as any foreign worker who uses technology and the internet to work and who transfers his temporary residence to the national territory, being able to develop his profession in that condition protected by current labor legislation. According to his project, the temporary residence for these “nomads” will last up to two years, which may be renewable for the same period only once. Its processing will be in charge of the National Directorate of Migration.

Sartori affirms that “international experience” shows that in some countries this modality has become an opportunity to promote tourism, thus increasing consumption in gastronomy and hotels. “Digital nomads are an opportunity for workers to come to Uruguay,” he said. “This can generate more income for the country and sources of work.” The special visa, he pointed out, “It would be a way” for Uruguay to adapt “to what is happening in the world.”

The project appears signed by the senator dated December 20, despite the fact that Sartori was again absent from Parliament since the end of November and will not return until the end of the recess.
