This Sunday (25), the city of São Paulo turns 472 years old. And to celebrate such a special date, an extensive cultural program was prepared, ranging from free entry to museums to pre-carnival block performances. And there will be no shortage of the traditional Bolo do Bixiga, a 40-year tradition in which the community in the central zone of the capital prepares the largest birthday cake table in the world.
In Bixiga, congratulations to the city take place on Rua Rui Barbosa, followed by the distribution of cake, starting at 12pm. But there will be another similar celebration at the Municipal Market. There will also be free cake distribution to the population, but with a password, which must be collected from 10:30 am.
The museums, libraries and Culture Factories linked to the Secretariat of Culture, Economy and Creative Industry of the state of São Paulo will have a diverse program, with free entry. Among the facilities are the Portuguese Language Museum, Catavento, the Museum of Indigenous Cultures, the Pinacoteca, the Immigration Museum and the Image and Sound Museum.
At the Pinacoteca, there will be pre-carnival and open rehearsals by the Afro Ilu Obá de Min block. Recognized for its artistic and political performance in valuing black and female culture, the group will occupy Praça da Pina Contemporânea, with drums, dancing and singing.
Catavento, a museum much loved by children, will have a samba circle with Batucadas das Pretas, starting at 12pm. At the Museum of Indigenous Cultures, the highlight is a conversation about territory, resistance and occupation of the city, which begins at 10:30 am with Akayse Fulni-ô and Kerexu Mirin, mediated by Emerson Baré Puranga.
The Museu das Favelas will promote the Perifanalysis Ball, starting at 1:30 pm, in addition to Di Quebradinha, an event that will promote workshops and street games with children, starting at 2 pm.
At the Fábricas de Cultura there will be lots of samba, parades, roller coaster rides and K-pop, as well as scavenger hunts and fun activities for the whole family.
In the open space of the São Paulo Museum of Art (Masp), on Avenida Paulista, a special Sesc Verão program will be held, with presentations and experiences that will feature the participation of renowned Brazilian athletes, such as Olympic medalist gymnasts Júlia Soares and Lorrane Oliveira, all with free entry.
The city’s anniversary program will also extend to municipal parks and planetariums, which will have a completely free program. At the Parque do Carmo Planetarium, the Luna Show at the Planetarium will be shown.
The city hall will also promote the concert Mitos Sonoros – FilarMônica, by the Orquestra Experimental de Repertório, at Theatro Municipal, starting at 5pm. The free concert will pay special tribute to the Brazilian artist and writer Maurício de Sousa, who recently turned 90 years old. Tickets can be collected 48 hours in advance via the website and 2 hours before the event at the Theatro Municipal box office, depending on availability.
Another event to celebrate the city’s anniversary is Sabores dos Bairros, which arrives in its second edition bringing together gastronomy, music and culture. The proposal is to enhance the city’s gastronomic diversity, highlighting the flavors of neighborhoods such as Liberdade, Mooca and Bom Retiro. Among the foods, the traditional mortadella snack, pastries and pizzas. The event is free and takes place on Avenida Professor Frederico Hermann Júnior, in front of the Pinheiros City Hall and close to Pinheiros Station.
