São Paulo will double the number of police officers to fight crime on the streets

The government of São Paulo announced today (4) that it will double the number of police officers on the streets of the capital to fight thefts and robberies. According to Governor Rodrigo Garcia, there is a perception that crimes are increasing, especially the theft of cell phones used to withdraw money from victims’ bank accounts through bank applications. “Unfortunately, property crimes: PIX, vehicle theft, cell phone theft, are also on the rise,” he said.São Paulo will double the number of police officers to fight crime on the streets

Criminals disguising themselves as app delivery people will be one of the focuses of Operation Sufoco. “I’m going to leave here, on behalf of the population of São Paulo, a very clear warning to these bandits who, in a cowardly way, are hiding behind a helmet, they are carrying a fake delivery boy’s backpack. delivery on their backs, who, in a cowardly way, rob people and harass women, so that they change their profession or change state, because the police go after each one of them”, emphasized the governor.

He explained that the companies will share the information from the delivery records with the police. “I want to thank these companies that are being collaborative and are opening and exchanging information from the databases with our police. This is going to be key in a moment of a blitz,” he said.

how will it be

The increase in the number of police officers on the streets will be based on the daily rates for overtime, in which agents can work overtime in their free time.

According to the government, this will make it possible to increase the number of police officers on the streets of São Paulo from 5,000 to 9,700 a day. BRL 41.8 million per month will be spent on the payment of overtime and the increased use of vehicles and helicopters.

The city of São Paulo will also increase the number of the Metropolitan Civil Guard (GCM) on the streets. The number of guards on the streets should rise from an average of 1,800 to 2,500.

The police and the GCM will act in the main traffic axes of the city and in the places with the highest number of robberies and thefts.

feeling of security

The governor also said that one of the objectives of the operation is to “improve the population’s sense of security”. According to him, more than statistics, the action responds to a perception of insecurity in the face of robberies and thefts in the city – “what the population is seeing on the streets and feeling in their daily lives in the city”.

He also defended the use of lethal force against criminals who are willing to fight the police. “Here in São Paulo, the criminal who raises his weapon to the police will be shot. Because this is what society is waiting for, an active police that, within the limits of the law, will act very rigorously against crime”, he assured.
