The president of the Regional Electoral Court of São Paulo (TRE-SP), judge Paulo Galizia commented on the results of the last elections when speaking during the ceremony. He pointed out that although women are the majority in the São Paulo electorate, they are still a minority among those elected. “Women registered as voters outnumber men by more than 2 million people. Unfortunately, the female majority is still far from being reflected at the ballot box, ”he emphasized.
According to Galicia, only 23.5% of those elected in 2022 are women. The judge pondered, however, that there was a significant growth in relation to 2014, when those elected were only 9.6%.
The state of São Paulo, the largest electoral college in the country, had, this year, 34.6 million eligible voters.
“Evident imbalances are also verified when analyzing numerically the candidacies by color or race in the state of São Paulo. However, optimism is reborn when we compare the statistics of the last two elections”, added the TRE president. According to him, in 2018, 8.4% of those elected declared themselves black. In 2022, the percentage was 15.8%.
Without citing specific facts, Galicia said that 2022 was a turbulent year, but that the Electoral Justice was strengthened. “This year will certainly go down as the most difficult period of trials faced by the Electoral Justice in its fierce history of nine decades that are now complete. And the word that historians of the future will use to explain the performance of the Brazilian Electoral Justice in 2022 can only be one: resilience. Resilience understood as the unquestionable ability to overcome the adversities that added up”, he highlighted.
