On the occasion of the end of year festivities, the Office for Disaster Risk Management (OGRD) of the department of Santander has issued a series of recommendations addressed to the entire community with the purpose of minimize risks and protect lives during this season of high social and recreational activity. This call seeks to remind parents, caregivers and visitors that safety begins with the responsibility of each person, especially in natural spaces such as rivers and spas, which receive a greater flow of bathers and tourists at this time.

Among the main recommendations, the authorities insist on the need to maintain constant surveillance over minors when recreational activities are carried out in rivers, spas or other aquatic areas. Currents, slopes, and changes in flow can pose a significant hazard to those inexperienced in water environments. This measure is especially important because the presence of unsupervised children and adolescents increases the likelihood of accidents.
The OGRD has also emphatically called on the community to avoid any type of burning that could cause firesparticularly given the high temperatures and dry season that is recorded in several areas of the department. Controlled burning for crops, throwing cigarette butts in areas with vegetation cover or burning solid waste are practices that can trigger large forest fires. In rural and peri-urban sectors, these fires can spread quickly, affecting homes, fauna and the natural environment.

These recommendations are framed within a broader view of risk management in Colombia, in which local and national authorities work in an articulated manner to prevent emergencies and strengthen the resilience of communities.
