Work on the memorial in honor of the victims of the fire at Kiss Nightclub should begin later this year, but there is no set date. The promise was made on Friday night (28) by the mayor of the city of Santa Maria (RS), Jorge Pozzobom.
He signed a term of commitment with the president of the Association of Families of Victims and Survivors of the Tragedy of Santa Maria, Gabriel Rovadoschi. The document, however, does not establish a date to start construction, but Pozzobom reaffirmed that there will be commitment in carrying out the work.
“With all the people here in Santa Maria as citizens and who deserve to receive this space of memory, as long as this is possible, but which will also serve, depending on the time, as a memorial to justice or a memorial to impunity”, he said. Pozzobom.
The estimated cost of the work is R$ 4 million. Funding sources must come from the state and city governments. The mayor has already met with Governor Eduardo Leite to present the project.
The execution time of the work should be between 12 and 18 months, according to the deputy mayor, Rodrigo Décimo, who will coordinate the construction.
The president of the Association of Victims’ Relatives, Gabriel Rovadoschi, highlighted the importance of delivering the memorial.
“What is most important is the absolute commitment that we are going to memorialize. That’s guaranteed. This term that we received today is a symbolism that we are going to make this memorial”, said Gabriel.
The project was approved in 2017 in a competition and is still waiting to become a reality.
In 2013, Kiss nightclub caught fire after a band performing there used an outdoor flare. The fire resulted in the deaths of 242 people. To this day, the case continues without anyone being arrested.
