The Ministry of Health of the province of Santa Fe, launched an alert to a recent outbreak of trichinosis in various locations in the territory. So far, 26 suspected and 8 confirmed cases of this parasitic disease have been registered. At the same time, the provincial Health portfolio asked the population to avoid sausage foods that have not gone through sanitary controls.

What is trichinosis?
This disease, called trichinosis, is a parasitic condition caused by a nematode (worm) and its transmission consists of eating pork that is infested by larvae of the parasite in question. These larvae lodge in muscle cells or fat walls of the animal. Subsequently, the larvae reach adulthood in the small intestine of the person who ingests them, where they lay larvae again and the cycle is repeated even throughout the life of the host.
The symptoms of this disease are: fever; abdominal pain; cramps, diarrhea, muscle pain; palpitations; eyelid edema; skin rash; headache and blurred vision. The host can achieve a balance between the conditions and the immune response by making the presence of the parasite go undetected. To date, there is no specific treatment for this disease. Pain relievers and bowel medicines are often given, but they cannot be withdrawn from the muscles.
