An extratropical cyclone that hits Santa Catarina since dawn on Wednesday (10) has wreaked havoc in several cities. The phenomenon caused wind gusts of about 90 kilometers per hour. Some cities, such as the capital Florianópolis, registered precipitation of almost 200 millimeters in the last 24 hours.
During the afternoon, the Civil Defense of the state warned of the occurrence of persistent rain of strong intensity with flooding, risk of flash floods, landslides and floods on the North Coast and in the Itajaí Valley. The note cites 28 cities, including Balneário Camboriú, Blumenau, Garuva, Itajaí and São Francisco do Sul.
There was also maximum landslide alert in Joinville during the afternoon.
The Secretary of Civil Defense of Santa Catarina, David Busarello, urged the population to be cautious when taking to the streets.
According to Celesc, the state’s electric power company, around 200,000 consumer units were without power. The most affected regions are Florianópolis, Itajaí and the northern coast of Santa Catarina.
