The National Fish Health Agency (Sanipes), attached to the Ministry of Production reported that the sanitary certification in Sechura Bay (currently in process) will promote some 40,000 direct and indirect jobs with the export of scallops to various international markets such as the European Union, the United States, Canada, China, Japan, United Kingdom, Australia, Brazil and Chile.
It should be noted that this Piuran coastal area concentrates more than 80% of the national production of this bivalve mollusk, followed by the Áncash and Ica regions; and has the participation of some 240 local mariculture associations, whose health coordinators are responsible for facilitating communication and articulation with the health authority.
The production of scallops in Sechura is developed throughout 09 production areas, among which are Vichayo, Puerto Rico, Matacaballo, Constante, Las Delicias, Parachique, Barrancos and Chulliyachi; with an extension of more than 13,000 hectares of sea.
The executive president of Sanipes, Pedro Saravia, highlighted that it is the main economic activity of Sechura; and it is subject to permanent sanitary control, authorization audits, unannounced inspections, official controls, as well as weekly, fortnightly and semi-annual monitoring; according to the programming of the different sanitary criteria, indicated in the official monitoring schedule for the production areas authorized for the European Union.
“Sanipes also ensures that good environmental responsibility practices are complied with, such as proper management of solid waste, adequate and approved environmental impact study, and environmental monitoring; with the purpose that all areas classify under the Risk-Based Process Inspection model, which will generate conditions for mariculturists to improve their production and accelerate their commercial processes”, added Saravia.
A pre-audit with the mariculturists will soon begin as a preparatory stage for the audit to be carried out by the health authority of the European Union, which is the main export destination for these resources; hoping that the culmination of the sanitary revaluation project will allow optimizing resources, agreeing on solutions and reducing times, giving sustainability to aquaculture activities over time.
SANITARY REASSESSMENT PERIOD
In August 2018, through Supreme Decree No. 004-2018-PRODUCE, which modifies the sanitary standard for live bivalve molluscs, approved by Supreme Decree No. 07-2004-PRODUCE, it was established that the sanitary revaluation of the production areas classified, must be carried out every 6 years or in shorter periods, when the results of the monitoring determine prolonged changes in the patterns of sanitary behavior of said areas.
