Former President Julio María Sanguinetti criticized the attitude that the Cabildo Abierto has been showing in terms of his refusal to vote, for the moment, on the social security reform. And he added that “the threats” carried out by the party led by Senator Guido Manini Ríos are already running out of “his patience.”
“We all went out to the door of the government house to express our agreement. General Manini himself said that his proposals had been considered. It was recognized that the chapter of some modifications was not closed, to improve the project, without touching the substance (…) Unfortunately, the Cabildo Abierto the next day was already questioning what was agreed, “said the former Colorado president in statements to El País.
Faced with the questioning of some lobbying leaders -and also front-leaders- regarding the time in which they want to approve the reform, the two-time president pointed out that there is “no rush”, but warned that “it has been two years since trying to fulfill the Commitment for the country”, in reference to the text signed by all the leaders of the coalition after the first round of 2019 and before the runoff.
“On October 17 of last year an agreement was solemnized,” Sanguinetti insisted. You can not miss the word. What we agree on is accepted, what is not, we are all equally committed to voting on the coalition project. And if there is no law, it will not be our responsibility but that of those who break agreements “
As for whether the coalition is at stake because of this dispute, the Colorados’ general secretary said: “I hope not, because I assume that we will all finally fulfill what we promised.”
“I don’t get the idea of the violation of the word. I do regret the rude expressions of Senator (Guillermo) Domenech, who says that they can not vote and that if they do not vote, they should be fired because they will not leave. They will be able to stay, but it is clear that they will have to assume their responsibility. We have collaborated with a lot of effort, a lot of technical support, a lot of patience, we have bitten our tongues so as not to answer intemperance and non-compliance, but everything has a limit”.
Sanguinetti, in any case, said he was waiting for an agreement to be reached on the matter and for the reform to be voted on. But in this sense he also warned: “It is not an agreement with the Cabildo. It is not an agreement between our president and Manini. We have a voice and a vote. I know that he raised two conditions and when he did, he answered in the negative, because there were no longer two but eight… I trust, I hope, that there is understanding. The future of the country is above all else and it is put at risk with profiling and personal prominence that do not contribute to a good cause”.
Former President Julio María Sanguinetti expressed his criticism of the position of the Cabildo Abierto in relation to its refusal to vote on the social security reform at this time, and stated that the “threats” that the party led by Senator Guido Manini has been making Rios, they are running out of “your patience.”
Sanguinetti recalled that all the leaders of the coalition agreed in October last year to comply with the “Commitment for the country”, in reference to the text signed after the first round of 2019 and before the ballot. The former Colorado president pointed out that if the reform is not approved, the responsibility will lie with those who break the agreements and not with his party.
Despite the situation, Sanguinetti said he expected an agreement to be reached and the reform to be voted on, since the future of the country is above personalist positions and political prominence.
The two-time president also criticized the rude expressions of Senator Guillermo Domenech, who said that the Cabildo Abierto could not vote and if they are kicked out, they will not leave. Sanguinetti emphasized that the violation of the word is not an option and that he expects everyone to fulfill what they promised.
Sanguinetti made it clear that this is not an agreement with Cabildo Abierto and that the coalition has a say in the matter. He trusts that there will be an understanding to move forward with the social security reform and that the coalition leaders will fulfill their promises.
