MIAMI, United States. — Three pre-university students from the province of Sancti Spíritus were injured in an unusual event that occurred last week prior to the passage through that province of the so-called Freedom Caravan.
According to a newspaper report Escambraythe event occurred on January 6, when students “leaned against an artistic mural embedded in the wall, the elements of concrete, bricks, and other heavy materials collapsing on the bodies of the three students.”
The official media indicates that the three injured young people belong to the Honorato del Castillo Urban Pre-University (IPU) and that two of them remain hospitalized, one in serious condition and the other in care.
Dr. Darelsy Balsaín Mencía, director of the José Martí Pérez Provincial Teaching Pediatric Hospital, in Sancti Spíritus, explained to Escambray that the injured students were admitted there and treated immediately by a multidisciplinary team of specialists.
The one in the worst condition, Manuel Enrique Cancio Amador, suffered multiple vertebral and lumbar fractures. After receiving first aid, he was sent to the José Luis Miranda Provincial Teaching Pediatric Hospital in Santa Clara, where he is still in serious condition.
The other young man admitted, Javier Enrique Pino Burgos, presented an exposed fracture of the left tibia and received the corresponding treatment and immobilization of the extremity with plaster. At the moment, he remains admitted to the Sancti Spiritus pediatric hospital, currently reported for care.
For his part, the student Lázaro Emmanuel Cabrera Pérez had a favorable evolution and was discharged last Saturday.
Andrei Armas Bravo, provincial director of Education in Sancti Spíritus, confirmed that the accident occurred while waiting for the Freedom Caravan. The official’s version agrees that the students were located on the parallel sidewalk with the wall of Colonel Francisco Aguiar Rodríguez Military Industry when the concrete elements collapsed.
