The head of the Spanish Executive, Pedro Sánchez, the NATO Secretary General, Jens Stoltenberg, and the President of Ukraine, Volodimir Zelensky, spoke telematically this Monday in the plenary session of the 68th. Parliamentary Assembly of the Atlantic Alliance, which is held in the capital of Spain.
With the war in Ukraine in the background, some 270 representatives of the 30 allied states and a hundred of the legislative chambers of partner countries have participated since Saturday in the various committees into which the assembly is structured, which ends tomorrow.
The parliamentarians have analyzed the strategic concept agreed at the NATO summit last June, also held in Madrid, the evolution of the war in Ukraine and the threats from Russia, as well as the situation in the Maghreb and the Sahel, climate change and cybersecurity.
The speaker of the allied Parliamentary Assembly, the American Gerald E. Connolly, said on Saturday that Russian President Vladimir Putin “has not dared to cross the NATO border.”
In his opinion, this is due to the value of the current strength of the Atlantic Alliance.
Connolly added that the increase in investment in defense has been shown to be necessary given the advancement of technology.
